Elimination of violence against women

Letter November 27, 2017
The destitute and the marginalised continue to suffer in silence as outlets to speak remain out of their reach

LAHORE: On November 25th, International Day for elimination of Violence against Women was observed. The day puts emphasis on eradication of varied forms of violence against women across the world. However, majority of the women, who constitutes for the greater proportion of reported and unreported cases, hailing from poor households remain unaware of this day that is held to only support them.

The destitute and the marginalised continue to suffer in silence as outlets to speak remain out of their reach. There is little change in their life as owing to social class, economic factors and gender inequality, the masculine gender remains to have an unspoken dominance over women. This is why it is important to include women hailing from less-affluent households when talking about violence against women or else initiatives like these are unlikely to bring about any change.
