Sindh government will conduct an animal census and prepare the database of animals and livestock in the province
HYDERABAD: It seems somewhat ridiculous to know that the Sindh government will conduct an animal census and prepare the database of animals and livestock in the province. Given the paucity of financial resources and shortage of skilled and trained human resources, which has already manifested itself in the recent national census, it would be wise enough for the Sindh government to first sort out the irregularities in the national census figures. Besides, with human beings dying every day in rural and urban areas of the province due to different treatable diseases and poverty, the government should give priority to reducing poverty, illiteracy and pay attention to improve conditions for a healthy living so as to cut the incidence of diseases.
Although the decision will improve the administrative and management work of the livestock department and help control the seasonal outbreak of diseases in animals, it would still require a sufficient amount of funds and training for the staff that would put an additional financial burden on the Sindh government.
First, the government should start with a province-wide crackdown against butchers and restaurants selling unchecked meat. Later, the government should undertake the exercise of an animals census in the province.
