Although beaten at the Porsche Grand Prix in Germany over the weekend, Caroline Wozniacki stays on top of the WTA women’s tennis rankings released yesterday.
The Dane, who was crumpled in the final by Julia Goerges, leads ahead of Belgian Kim Clijsters and Russian Vera Zvonareva. Rank outsider Goerges of Germany stunned the world number one 7-6, 6-3 to win her first title of the year in front of an ecstatic home crowd.
“I don’t quite know how I did it,” she beamed in a courtside interview. “Against Caroline it feels like you always have a mountain to climb and I did it.”
The top ten rankings primarily remained the same with the only change being the swap between Australian Samantha Stosur and China’s Li Na. Stosur has now moved back to sixth.
