The army has denied a news item which appeared in a British newspaper regarding Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Pervez Kayani’s secret contacts with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, labelling it false and baseless.

An ISPR spokesman denied the report that General Kayani and Indian PM Manmohan Singh are in communication through a secret channel.

The Times of London news item is unfounded and totally baseless,” the spokesman said in a statement released on Monday.

British newspaper The Times reported on April 23 that Singh appointed an unofficial envoy to make contact with General Kayani.

The report suggested that a secret diplomatic drive was launched to begin a new peace process between the two countries after a round of cricket diplomacy during the ICC World Cup.

Pragmatist | 12 years ago | Reply @Ravindra: Nothing if farther from the truth. The Pakistani military would gain NOTHING from making peace with India. The power that it enjoys today will be gone in one sweeping stroke. Right now it eats up half the budget and the generals enjoy princely lives with huge business stakes. They will pretend to talk while making plans for another Mumbai or Kargil when things start to make progress.
