Layyah youth demand jobs, women empowerment

Students urge govt to establish skill development facilities at the union council level

LAHORE: The government of Punjab needs to increase 5% quota for women employment, while the Punjab Job Portal and Business Training Programmes should be extended to university and district levels, including district Layyah.

This was recommended by youth delegates of district Layyah while presenting a charter of demands during a two-day workshop in Lahore on November 16-17. Bargad, a youth development organisation, in collaboration with OXFAM, organised this event. It was titled “Workshop on Punjab Youth Policy (PYP) 2012: Orientation and Making Synergies with Youth of District Layyah.”



As many as 20 youth delegates, including 15 girls from district Layyah, participated in the workshop. Youth delegates prepared a charter of demands according to the pressing needs of Layyah district. The charter was aligned with stipulations and pledges of the Punjab Youth Policy 2012.

The charter of demands urged the government to establish skill development facilities at the union council level and introduce courses in shoemaking, solar repairing, knitting, shorthand, English and Chinese languages, entrepreneurship and soft skills etc.

There was also a need to upgrade existing intermediate colleges for women in district Layyah to the status of postgraduate institutions.

The Layyah youth also agreed that girls faced mobility issues when it came to education and employment.
