Keeping Wana safe

While the military forces are tirelessly trying to rid Pakistan of terrorism

ISLAMABAD: While the military forces are tirelessly trying to rid Pakistan of terrorism, the extremists have found another way to exercise their influence in the country, especially in South Waziristan region. The so-called peace committee in Wana in South Waziristan has issued guidelines on living in the area that replicate the Taliban-style restrictions. From women only moving around the area by being accompanied by a male guardian to a halt on ‘un-islamic’ activities like music and dance, the leaflet reads like an autocratic leadership pamphlet. What is more worrisome is that the faction is headed by Salahuddin alias Ayubi, a successor of Mullah Muhammad Nazir who was an influential Taliban leader killed in a US drone strike in 2013.

The authorities concerned should immediately look into the situation and step in to undo such guidelines for the betterment of society. South Waziristan has seen enough blood in the decade-long hold of the Taliban from 2003 to 2013. It shouldn’t be allowed to be become a hotbed of Talibanisation again.
