Mukhtaran Mai judgement: The Dark Ages

Letter April 24, 2011
There is a silver lining in the verdict asmany men have spoken out in Mai’s defence and against the court’s verdict.

ISLAMABAD: There is something very frightening about the fact that a person as publically wronged as Mukhtaran Mai and well represented by one of the country’s most competent lawyers, Aitzaz Ahsan, is not able to get justice. What kind of message is being sent to the rest of the world? That we are living in the Dark Ages?

It shows justice is not only blind, it is deaf as well. But perhaps there is a silver lining in the outcome. And that has to do with the fact that many men have also spoken out in Mai’s defence and against the court’s verdict.

Also, it should be remembered that, despite her poverty and lack of education, Mukhtaran Mai has defended women’s rights more than many of her more affluent and educated counterparts.
