On this day, three future superstars – namely Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor – took their first steps into the Indian film industry. And now, it’s been an entire decade since we first saw them on the big screen.
Deepika Padukone out of Forbes' list of highest paid actresses
Ranbir and Sonam ventured forth with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya. Unfortunately, the musical drama was overshadowed by fellow newcomer Deepika and Shah Rukh Khan’s colourful entertainer Om Shanti Om.
As was expected, the latter went on to become one of the highest grossing Bollywood films of all time, with Saawariya succumbing to SRK's star power. It might have been him who got all the credit for Om Shanti Om but guess who benefited from it the most? Deepika. Talk about a dream debut…
But despite that, the dimpled beauty has had to struggle to carve a niche for herself in Bollywood. Ranbir and Sonam too have had their share of hits, flops and average performers over the last 10 years.
I missed out on formal education, so I am a 12th pass: Deepika Padukone
But despite the odds, all three have largely managed to sustain themselves in the industry, with Sonam still riding high on the success of Neerja, Deepika outshining everyone in Padmavati and Ranbir gearing up for the most ambitious film of his career: Sanjay Dutt’s biopic.
But ever wondered what their success rate has been? Times Now revisited the filmography of the trio and calculated the percentage of hits, flops and average films they have given in their careers. Let’s check it out!
Ranbir Kapoor
Of all the 16 films the Bollywood heartthrob has done, only six turned out to be hits at the box office. Eight failed to generate much footfall at theatres and two were average in terms of box office collection.
Hits: Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Raajneeti, Rockstar, Barfi!, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
Deepika, Priyanka ahead of Ranbir, Ranveer in Bollywood's highest-paid list
Flops: Saawariya, Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, Anjaana Anjaani, Besharam, Roy, Bombay Velvet, Tamasha and Jagga Jasoos
Average films: Bachna Ae Haseeno and Wake Up Sid.
Deepika Padukone
In terms of percentage of hit films, Deepika is far ahead of Ranbir with a success rate of 57.14%, as opposed to his 37.5%. Of course, this hardly comes as a surprise for anyone who keeps tabs on box-office numbers as barring Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Ranbir hasn't delivered a single hit in the last four and a half years. Deepika's list, on the contrary, boasts of a string of hits between 2011 and 2015.
Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s dating history goes viral
Hits: Om Shanti Om, Love Aaj Kal, Housefull, Desi Boyz, Cocktail, Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Happy New Year, Piku and Bajirao Mastani
Flops: Chandni Chowk to China, Karthik Calling Karthik, Lafangey Parindey, Break Ke Baad, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey, Finding Fanny, Tamasha
Average films: Bachna Ae Haseeno and Aarakshan
Sonam Kapoor
Sonam, sadly, comes last, with a hit percentage of 35.71%. However, things might be improving as she has National Award-winning Neerja as part of her résumé now. Also, it’s the only film of hers to do well without an established male star.
I was born to play Sanjay Dutt: Ranbir Kapoor
Hits: I Hate Luv Stories, Raanjhana, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Neerja
Flops: Saawariya, Aisha, Mausam, Players, Bewakoofiyaan and Dolly Ki Doli
Average films: Delhi-6, Thank You and Khoobsurat
Let’s see what the future has in store for the three stars now…
