Study urges women to join power sector

Experts say patriarchal and culturally structured barriers need to be removed

LAHORE: The findings of a scientific study, jointly conducted by Institute of Social and Cultural Studies (ISCS) and National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), have highlighted that the power transmission sector is lacking women integration.

It stressed that women should be encouraged to join this sector for its development.

The findings were revealed in a consultative workshop organised by ISCS in collaboration with World Bank and NTDC at the report titled Gender Assessment Study and Strategy Development Report.

Punjab University’s faculty of behavioural and social sciences dean Dr Zakria Zakar and  participants from NTDC, Asian Development Bank, Punjab Commission on the Status of Women, Department of Social Welfare, other relevant departments and a large number of students were present on the occasion.

The study focused on gender integration within power transmission sector in Pakistan.

Addressing the workshop, Dr Zakar said that patriarchal and culturally structured barriers need to be removed by conducting behavioural change campaigns.

He stressed that for the development of society, women’s participation was essential in every walk of life, including NTDC.

He added that ISCS research wing had been continuously conducting research on national issues and contributing to the policy-making process.
