Stalemate over delimitation

Letter November 09, 2017
The government is still struggling to achieve consensus over passing of a constitutional amendment

LAHORE: The government is still struggling to achieve consensus over passing of a constitutional amendment on the delimitation of constituencies for the upcoming general elections. The PPP and the MQM have refused to accept the results of the census in Sindh and have dissociated themselves from the yet to be approved legislation, whereas the PTI has offered conditional support on the basis of consensus among major stakeholders. With major political parties still in disagreement over the issue, the amendment if passed will be a negotiated victory for the ruling party. The disagreement, as of now, appears nothing more than an attempt by political parties to partly avoid any possible loss of votes and seats in the next election, and at the same time give the government a tough time in securing assurance for timely conduct of elections and tabulation of census results and delimitation.
