CCI set to discuss delimitation law on November 13

Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination says meeting will be held on Monday, November 13

ISLAMABAD: The federal government announced on Thursday to convene a meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) to break the deadlock on the issue of the constitutional amendment for delimitation of constituencies.

Failure to adopt the amendment before November 10 deadline set by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) may cause a delay in the next general elections.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), one of the main opposition parties, refused to yield ground, urging the government to take the matter back to the CCI. Unlike PPP, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and other parties are showing flexibility over the matter.

 



Political parties believe that parliament supersedes the CCI and it should resolve the issue.

Four consecutive meetings on the issue, headed by the Speaker of the National Assembly, failed to produce any result.

 



The Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) issued a notification in this regard, stating: “The Prime Minister’s office has informed that the 33rd meeting of the CCI is scheduled to be held on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 1200 hours in the Cabinet Room, PM’s Office, Islamabad to discuss one-point agenda i.e. Census and Delimitation Issues,” the ministry’s notification read.

The CCI is headed by the Prime Minister.
