PM forms committee to 'fine-tune' new proposal for PIA

Cabinet briefed on reallocation of NA seats post-census

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Wednesday directed the formation of a committee to conduct a detailed study and “fine-tune” the proposed strategy to make the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) a profitable business venture.

Chairing a meeting of the federal cabinet, the prime minister received a briefing by the law minister on the Tuesday’s meeting of parliamentary leaders to resolve issues related to the reallocation of National Assembly seats in the light of Census 2017.

According to a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office, a detailed briefing was given to the federal cabinet on future business plans and strategy to turn PIA around. The PM directed the formation of a committee to fine-tune the strategy.

The cabinet was also briefed about the meetings chaired by the National Assembly speaker with leaders of various political parties to discuss and resolve issues related to a constitutional amendment bill in the light of Census 2017.

The ministers appreciated the efforts of the speaker in getting together all political parties and allies in parliament and leading the entire consultation. They also appreciated the hard work put in by the law minister in this regard.

The cabinet approved a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on promotion of tourism between Pakistan and Mauritius. The meeting also gave approval to the signing of agreements of cooperation between the International Islamic University, Islamabad, and Belarusian universities.

The cabinet okayed the signing of memorandum to understanding (MoU) between the Pakistan Higher Education Commission and Australian universities to encourage cooperation in the fields of higher education and academic research.

The meeting cleared the way for the award of “Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit” to Khalid Memon, the former Pakistani ambassador to Poland, by the Polish government. It also granted ex-post facto approval for the Turkish ‘Legion of Merit’ awarded to Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman and the ‘Legion of Merit (Degree of Commander)’ Medal awarded to former naval chief Admiral Zakaullah, by the United States government.

The cabinet approved ex-post facto the start of negotiations and signing of agreement on cooperation between the Associated Press of Pakistan Corporation (APPC) and the National Company Kazakh Information Agency (Kazinform).
