Mukhtaran Mai’s quest for justice (II)

Letter April 22, 2011
This has nothing to do with the way the law is written, it has to do with interpretation of law and cultural values.

ABU DHABI: It’s all well and good to intellectualise to death the efficacy of our laws. However, the fact remains that this has nothing to do with the way the law is written, it has more to do with the interpretation of law and our cultural values. Mukhtaran Mai is a woman, she is poor and she was raped. As an individual, she has no position in our kind of society, and unfortunately that is how mindsets work in Pakistan. Our police and judiciary are no exceptions because they are also very much part of Pakistani society.
