PML-Q, MQM to join coalition govt

Party members discuss ways to persuade the JUI-F to join the federal govt's proposed national govt.

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have decided in principle to join the Pakistan Peoples Party-led (PPP) coalition government.

Sources told The Express Tribune that in a meeting in Lahore on Thursday, party members also discussed ways to persuade the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) to join the federal government’s proposed national government. PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain took the responsibility to bring JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on board, sources said.

The parties also discussed the portfolios that the federal government has offered them and the MQM expressed concern over its share of ministries.

The PML-Q has been offered four federal and four state ministries. But while they have not been offered the governorship of Punjab, they have been offered a place to represent Pakistan in the United Nations. The MQM has been offered only two ministries.

Sources said that the PPP implicated Moonis Elahi in the National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) scam and since the PML-Q considers the Elahis as the real power of the party and the political future of the Chaudhrys of Gujrat, it has been forced into joining the federal government.

Sources also said that the PPP has invited PML-Q to join the government for two reasons. “Firstly, the PPP wants to give a message to the public that the 2011-12 budget has been passed with consent of all major parties. Secondly, they want to save the PML-Q’s face among the people in order to harm the PML-N’s vote bank,” sources said.

Sources said that the PPP had made appointments in the Federal Investigation Agency to please the PML-Q. They said that the Lahore High Court would most probably accept Moonis Elahi’s bail petition on April 23 or 24.

Sources said that the MQM’s apprehensions regarding the Sindh government have been addressed by the PPP so its office-bearers had informed Hussain of their availability for the federal government.

Meanwhile, JUI-F’s Senator Talha Mehmood met Hussain on Thursday and conveyed a message from his party’s chief who is currently in Belgium. In a telephonic conversation, Rehman assured Hussain that he will join the national government.

The people of Pakistan are not prepared to do anything on their own! They choose to vote for the very people who have track record in robbing the nation again and again!! Then there is Army who are always a law on to themselves and do as it pleases!! This army does not operate like normal democracy, where the ministers in charge instruct the army!! In Pakistan the Army instruct the Govt and implement the policies too!!!! Such is the state of this Land of Pure !!

Muhammad Ali | 13 years ago | Reply In a historical perspective, if this goes through, it will only damage MQM and Pakistan Tehreek-insaf. PTI probably will be damaged in a bigger way then anyone else. I dont think in current state of affairs this will damage PML N in anyway for next elections. Even if the election demographic changes or PTI some how manages to bring out masses for their support, now they will have 5 main stream parties to protect the status quo. PTI though politicking on principals must maneuver in the current circumstances to make friends with either PML Q or MQM. Being political is one thing and winning elections is a whole different ball game. To win elections you must make strategic arrangements and adjustments. Till last month I did believe PTI was on course to work with PML Q and MQM but this now looks like a another dud thrown into Imran's court. Good luck to PML Q, I strongly believe winner out of all this will be the well placed PML Q. They have historical data to prove the success of their work, they have numbers in the field and right frame of mind to win hopefully win elections in the future.

PML (Q) was never a party - its a flock of opportunists who will soon be disintegrated come the elections. PPP just wants to share the blame. So - just live with the real fruits of democracy. huh

No one is serious to get Pakistan out of this situation. They say bad things about Mr.Zardari and look at the them. They are all same with different faces. Chaudharies of Gujrat or PML (Q) are correct, after all who else except Moonis is the next saviour of the nation! Whta academic credentials - except the money thathis father & uncle cum susar and in NICL case he himself has made now? And yet again, Mian Nawaz and his associates are to be blamed for this coolation. it would be futile to say that these political parties have hardly introduced democracy within their own parties. they are opportunist - the last exmple is the upcoming Holy alliance of these stinking people - claimimg to be our leadrers.
