MULTAN: Member National Assembly Jamshed Dasti has extended support to Mufti Abdul Qavi, a suspect in the Qandeel Baloch murder case.

Multan police have included the former member of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee's name as a suspect in Qandeel's case at the request of her father.

The self-proclaimed actress and model Qandeel Baloch was strangled by her brother in the name of honour in July last year.

The police had included Qavi’s name as a suspect in the case at the request of Qandeel’s father, Muhammad Azeem, who in a statement before the police suspected the cleric’s possible role in the murder that took place weeks after Qandeel posted her selfies and videos with Qavi on social media.

The MNA inquired after Qavi, who is admitted in a hospital following 'cardiac arrest'.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Dasti said a conspiracy was hatched to defame the religious scholar. "There is no evidence against Mufti Qavi," he told reporters, adding that he will raise the issue in NA. "The PML-N is using Punjab police for its political motives to trap Mufti Qavi."
