Unattended deliveries

Three different cases in a span of 10 days have come to light in Punjab

LAHORE: Unfortunately, it is not surprising that women’s health in Pakistan is the least significant of an issue, most certainly because in many areas it’s still considered a taboo topic. However, what is worse than proper health being provided is denying its provision and Punjab has been on a roll on doing just that.

Three different cases in a span of 10 days have come to light in Punjab, where pregnant women have been denied assistance and hence the deliveries of the babies have been on road, stairs and street. Two cases from Lahore and one from Raiwand have depicted the poor state of government-run hospitals in the province that the PML-N government takes pride in. Not only are such deliveries hazardous for the mother and the child but go on to show the callous attitude of health providers whose job is, in fact, to serve people. This is why it is important for the health ministry to take stringent actions against the hospitals in question and their staff, so that no woman has to go through this ever again.
