Need to rein in monsters

Letter October 19, 2017
Cases of torture are on the rise

FAISALABAD: Two recent incidents reported in the media show the stark reality of intolerance and extremism prevalent in our society. A mini-bus conductor in Karachi beat a passenger to death over an argument on bus fare. A 22-year-old male teacher was tortured to death by six men for reasons unknown in Multan. Two different stories from two different provinces and cities in Pakistan, but held together with a single similar idea of intolerance.

Why have such stories become the norm in the country? Cases of torture are on the rise. This begs the question, where exactly is the state going wrong in addressing such issues. The laws are in place. Many investigations under way. But yet, nothing seems to stop this menace. And stories aren’t limited to a particular class. Perhaps, the focus of the government is more on eradicating terrorism — which is not to say it shouldn’t be a priority. The above-mentioned monsters should be dealt with an iron hand .
