Motorcycle ‘trackers'

As motorcycles are assembled and manufactured in factories in the interior areas of the province

KARACHI: The Sindh government is considering a plan to install tracking device on all motorcycles across the province — in an attempt to control the soaring crime rate in Karachi. The plan might partially help curtail petty crime or theft as evidentially some of the major terrorist incidents that took place in the city in the past were either suicide attacks or blasts from implanted devices. For instance, SP CID Chaudhry Aslam was killed in a suicide bomb attack. Further, for a terrorist to target a security sensitive location, it is no easy task to switch from a motorcycle to a car.

Although the government is about to launch the tracking device plan, no mechanism has been devised to make sure that trackers are installed in not just the new motorbikes but also in millions of those already on the roads and how the authorities will make sure that the trackers remain installed and functioning in the motorbikes.

As motorcycles are assembled and manufactured in factories in the interior areas of the province, ensuring implementation in all sorts of varieties and models is an idea far from practicality. Hence the proposed move might turn out to be as useless as the installation of CCTV cameras all over the city to control crimes.
