Police launch crackdowns in six cities in the province

KARACHI: Sindh police have arrested 1,108 malefactors during a province-wide crackdown against gutka mafia. The crackdown was aimed at limiting the production and sale of the substance. Sindh Inspector-General of

Police Allah Dino Khawaja ordered the crackdown and strict action against the menace.

During the operation between September 1 and October 9, 1,108 people were arrested and 910 cases were registered.

Gutka addiction takes city by storm

Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad and Larkana police, on several occasions, arrested suspects, registered cases and recovered large amounts of gutka and maavay from them.

Karachi police arrested 409 offenders, registered 309 cases and seized 407 kilogrammes (kg) of unpacked gutka, 3,341 gutka bags and 12,579 maavay packets. Hyderabad police, during a series of crackdowns, arrested 406 suspects and seized 2kg of gutka, 488,682 packets and 469 bags from them.

Mirpurkhas police arrested 106 miscreants, recovering 282,361 maavay and gutka packets from them. Shaheed Benazirabad police recovered 316,239 gutka bags and packets from 138 suspects. Sukkur police arrested 51 miscreants and seized 5,938 gutka bags and packets from them. Larkana police arrested five suspects and recovered 850 gutka bags and packets from them.
