According to the officers, two youngsters; Ayushi Bhupat, 18, and Avi Kachhwani, 20, were lured into smuggling by the third person, Kamal Motwani 38. “Kamal is the mastermind who has admitted to smuggling in the past,” said an officer.

The three, residents of Ulhasnagar, were leaving for Dubai when they were intercepted. The officials recovered 85,000 Euros, 7,100 US dollars and 905 United Arab Emirates Dirham, collectively worth Rs68.64 lakh. “The accused had rolled the foreign currency and inserted it up their rectums,” said the officer. In order to avoid suspicion, Kamal had booked the flight tickets separately. “We were suspicious about Kamal. He was being grilled when it was revealed that Ayushi too was involved,” said the officer.

After questioning Ayushi, they learnt of Avi’s role, the officer added. According to officials, foreign currency worth 30 lakh Indian rupees had been smuggled by Kamal in the past. Authorities also suspect that the accused were smuggling foreign currency to purchase gold. “There may be a syndicate involved in taking foreign currency out of the country and bringing in gold. Usually, there are separate a set of people to smuggle currency and gold,” said the officer.
