PESHAWAR: A senior official of Intelligence Bureau was seriously injured in an armed attack in Peshawar’s Hayatabad area on Monday.

A police official told The Express Tribune that Shirza Khan is deputy director in the IB and hails from Parachinar in the Kurram tribal agency.

“He was on his way back home from his office when unknown gunmen opened fire at him, leaving him seriously injured,” the police official said, adding, “He was rushed to the nearby Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) where his condition is stated to be critical.

“The attackers were riding a motorbike and fled after committing the crime,” he said, adding it was a targeted attack.

“So far it looks like a terrorist attack as IB members were targeted in the past too in a similar fashion,” he said.

“Shirza Khan lived in Phase 5 of Hayatabad where official residences of the majority of the government servants are located.”

The attackers seemed to be well aware of his routine movement and waiting for him in Phase I of the area to launch the attack, he added.
