Don’t just ‘clean Karachi’

KARACHI: The city government, along with Bahria Town Karachi, has recently launched a ‘clean Karachi’ campaign in the metropolis. The initiative is indeed commendable, however, there’s a lot to be done in the city besides cleaning and removing garbage heaps. The infrastructure, roads and the transport system need a substantial upgrade across the city as well.

The said campaign does not make up for the irreparable environmental and natural resource damage caused to the city with the real estate giant building high-rise towers throughout the city. Also, it is rather disappointing to know that the city government due to insufficient resources cannot carry out the basic activities on its own and the campaign is being run by a private entity for having better access to same resources and facilities.

The issue of meagre resources points at the never ending tussle between the local government, its subordinate bodies and the provincial government. Continuous and sustainable development requires that the two work together on such matters.
