Scientists work to enhance crop value 

Scientists were carrying out research to increase production of high nutritional value fodder crops

Agriculture scientists are busy in developing food crop varieties of higher nutritional value, which would enable people to get essential nutrients from regular food without turning to supplements and multivitamins to stay healthy, stated a press release issued Tuesday.

Punjab Director General (Research) Dr Abid Mahmood said that a new wheat variety possessing higher quantity of iron and vitamins was being developed and efforts would be made to ensure that it reaches small farmers once it is finally approved for general sowing.

Scientists were also busy carrying out research to increase production of high nutritional value fodder crops and world’s most famous varieties of dates. Abid said that modern technology was being employed to save water, adding that there were 1 million tube wells in Punjab in addition to water resources available through irrigation system.
