KARACHI: The federal government has approved 3.5mmcf gas for Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Khairpur, moving a step towards Sindh’s development and making the province attractive for investors.

During a visit, Board of Investment (BoI) Chairman Miftah Ismail informed Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah that his efforts have yielded results and gas has been approved for SEZ in Khairpur.

The chief minister was of the view that the SEZ is located on the main National Highway and was ideally located with close proximity to nearby markets. “Its entire infrastructure has been developed - only gas was required to formally launch it,” said Shah, adding that it would strengthen the provincial economy and generate employment. He also demanded share of the province from Sui Southern Gas Company’s (SSGC) transmission line. “People of Sindh have a right to get their due share from the transmission line laid in Sindh.

“I want the provincial government to be allowed to have its own gas distribution company,” he said. In this way the other provinces producing gas should have their own gas companies, he suggested.

Referring to the issue, the BoI chairman said that it was possible to allow provinces to establish their gas distribution companies but it would be decided by the federal government.
