Building solutions for whom?

Letter September 23, 2017
Hai’s proposal lacks far-sightedness for such a project to be undertaken

KARACHI: This is in response to Syed Moazzam Hai’s article title ‘Innovative building solutions’ published on September 18th. The idea of Mr Hai’s proposal in the paper is quite fascinating. Theoretically, it would help in solving many issues major cities in the country are currently facing.

However, Mr Hai’s proposal lacks far-sightedness for such a project to be undertaken. Important questions, such as, where would the residents of these localities be housed for the time being and would the government or builders be willing to provide them with all the necessities they were previously enjoying at these new places, are left unanswered.

It is one thing to start building projects into vertical setups and a completely different thing to renovate already occupied localities. The government has already failed at providing basic necessities to the people. There is little hope of them doing anything to de-horizontalise our cities.
