Revision of textbooks

Letter April 17, 2011
One can only hope and pray that this time around there will be some real progress on this important issue.

LAHORE: This is with reference to Raza Rumi’s article of April 15 titled “Our textbooks and the lies they teach”. The writer has written on a very important subject, the national education curriculum, and it needs the urgent attention of the government.

Under the previous government, the provinces were tasked with developing and introducing new textbooks, with the assistance of not only their textbook boards but also private publishers. It isn’t clear what became of that but it would be fair to say that no tangible result materialised.

A deadline of August 2008 was set to introduce a new curriculum for compulsory subjects such as English, Pakistan Studies and Islamiat. This deadline has now been pushed to June 2011. One can only hope and pray that this time around there will be some real progress on this important issue.
