KARACHI: The PTI Chairman Imran Khan has said the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) instead of focusing on its prime function of holding free and fair elections is issuing contempt notices.

“It is very rare for the ECP to serve contempt notice. The ECP should rather focus on its work which is to ensure transparent elections in the country – a work which it has failed to do,” he said on Wednesday.

Imran was responding to a question – with regard to the arrest warrants issued for him by the ECP in a contempt case – while talking to the media at Karachi Airport before departing for Islamabad.

“I don’t even know what is my crime,” added the PTI chief, who addressed a successful public rally in Hyderabad on Tuesday. “The ECP seems to be an institution of [the PPP chief] Asif Ali Zardari and [former premier] Nawaz Sharif as it ignores lack of transparency in recent by-elections of NA-120,” he added.

Imran claimed that his struggle was against corruption and not any particular person or party.

“Our mission is to end corruption from the country. We are not against any particular individual and party but against those who are involved in corruption and have looted revenue earned through taxes of common man,” he added.

He said up till now his party had been pursuing former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who, he said, is a Godfather of Corruption, and had escaped accountability after appointing his own people in departments like National Accountability Bureau and the Federal Investigation Agency.

“However now the apex court has successfully given a decision against him,” he said.

He also criticised ‘the alliance’ between the PPP and the PML-N and said there is ‘a deal’ between the two leading parties to support each other in graft. “The so-called Charter of Democracy was never for the sake of democratic system but to strengthen their corrupt practices in the country,” he claimed.

Criticising the PPP and its provincial government in Sindh, Imran said Sindh government was more corrupt than any other provincial government.

“It is time for the people of Sindh to raise voice against corruption and demand action against their corrupt rulers who despite having ruled the province for several years have not provided health, education and other basic facilities to their voters,” he said.

He said funds that should have been spent on the province had been sent abroad and everyone knew that Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur were involved in money laundering.

“Soon after Muharram I am going to hold another public gathering in the province and will make the people of Sindh raise voice against their rights snatched by their rulers,” he added.

He added every individual Pakistani now owed about Rs120,000 to lenders as the PML-N government has taken huge loans which he said were never spent for public welfare.
