Culture comes to capital’s schools

Lok Virsa organises the first "Children Lok Mela" at a local school in the capital

ISLAMABAD: Lok Virsa on Tuesday organised the first "Children Lok Mela" at a local school in the capital.

The National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage in collaboration with the training wing of the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) and Directorate General for Special Education (DGSE) has been holding a series of programmes under "Craft of the Month" which has seen the participation of over 15,000 students across 16 programmes.

The programme will also feature a one-day "Children Lok Mela" organised every month at an FDE designated school.

The first mela was held at the Islamabad Model College for Girls (IMCG) in Sector I-9/1, which featured a number of colourful activities such as artisans-at-work, live folk musical performances by artists and traditional drummers (dhols), traditional food stalls, and traditional horse dance.

Lok Virsa has launched a new series called "Craft is Knowledge" with the idea of `Harnessing Culture with Education'. The programme will promote traditional skills, encourage master artisans and inculcate awareness amongst the younger generation, especially children, about indigenous folk culture.
