Sweating is cited by 63 per cent of the women as their most embarrassing body issue, according to Perspirex. Deodorants are commonly used to overcome the problem.

Doctors at Cosmopolitan revealed that most people use deodorants wrong. Dr Dawn Harper, who features on Embarrassing Bodies, points out four common errors everyone makes while applying the antiperspirant.

Moreover, she explained that there is a difference between deodorant and antiperspirant.

"Antiperspirants are designed to prevent sweat whilst deodorants are used to mask the smell,” explained Dr Harper.

"Interestingly, fresh sweat doesn’t smell. The odour is produced when bacteria on the skin break down the sweat. Anyone conscious of body odour should use a pH balanced soap to wash as perfumed products can alter the pH of the skin making it a better environment for the bacteria to grow, which in turn could exacerbate the problem," she added.

As wet skin does not absorb anything well, it is best to use deodorant on dry skin, as advised by Dr Harper.

It is common to use antiperspirants when we wake up in the morning. However, Dr Harper suggests applying it in the evening and leaving it on the whole night for the effect to last long. She advises washing your arm pits with soap and water in the morning.

How female designers are gradually taking over the global fashion industry

If you use a hair dryer to dry your armpits after applying deodorant, you are not alone. Dr Harper says this trick is actually quite necessary to get rid of the dampness properly before dressing up.

Surprisingly, it is advised to not use deodorant every day.

“Apply two strokes up and two strokes down to each armpit. You should only need to do this once or twice a week," Harper advised.
