KARACHI: It is edifying that the Sindh government has announced plans for a public library at the Anti-terrorism Court building once the courts are moved to Central Jail, Karachi.

‘There is no official directorate of public libraries in Pakistan’

However, more important is the need for necessary funding and measures to keep public libraries functioning — unlike the many others already present in the Old City area of the metropolis, which now appear to be defunct heritage sites. There is also a dire need for a system upgrade and provision of modern facilities in public libraries which are technologically outdated and dysfunctional.
