Agree to disagree

Letter September 07, 2017
Through Dr Zulfiqar’s article, we can understand that an extremist may be among us or in fact be ourselves too

KARACHI: This is in response to Dr S Zulfiqar’s article titled ‘The mind of an extremist’ published on September 2nd. Dr Zulfiqar has managed to explain the complex mindset of a person with extremist tendencies. More often than not, we not only associate the word extremist with a terrorist but also wonder what could have led a person to carry out such heinous crimes.

Through Dr Zulfiqar’s article, we can understand that an extremist may be among us or in fact be ourselves too. Most of us have the tendency but because of our privileged backgrounds we are not exposed to things that may push us to become one. However, if we want to achieve a country that is diverse and progressive, we need to first counter any extreme ideas of our own and then try to make others also realise that we can live peacefully as far as we agree to disagree with one another. Extremism is not taught; it is learnt and hence, we need to work harder to unlearn it.
