The movement for creation of Bahawalpur province took a new turn with the launch of a new political party, the Bahawalpur Awami Party (BAP).
The announcement was made by the Ameer of Bahawalpur Nawab Salahuddin Abbasi at a public gathering held at Sadiq Garh Palace, Dera Nawab Sahib.
Announcing the launch of the BAP as “declaration of Bahawalpur,” Abbasi said the party would struggle for the restoration of the former state of Bahawalpur as a new province in southern Punjab.
“I know how the province of Bahawalpur will come into being,” Abbasi said while addressing the gathering. “No assembly or parliament will create your province. You will create it on the streets and on the railway tracks,” he added.
He declared that his party will fight against the discrimination faced by the people of Bahawalpur for the last several decades.
“You will have to come out to secure your rights; you will have to offer sacrifices,” he said, adding that he would spearhead the struggle.
He also urged the political bigwigs of the area to join hands for the betterment of their own people and area.
Senator Muhammad Ali Durrani, former federal minister Syed Tasneem Nawaz Gardezi, former state minister Malik Farooq Azam, Ameer Jamat-e-Islami Punjab Syed Waseem Akhter and several former provincial ministers were present at the occasion.
