Plan to deploy 1,200 more cops for Eid in Peshawar

Additional checkpoints set up at entry, exit points

PESHAWAR: In the wake of bomb attacks on levies in Landi Kotal and explosions on empty checkpoints on the outskirts of the city, the police in Peshawar have decided to beef up security across the district for Eidul Azha.

A high-ranking police official told The Express Tribune on Thursday that an additional 1,200 policemen will be deployed at the entry and exit points to the district to maintain security over the religious festival.

He added that as many as 1,085 policemen will be deployed at 217 large mosques where Eid congregations are scheduled to take place.

Moreover, the official said that police had set up an additional 101 checkpoints at all the exit and entry points which are being manned by 449 policemen around the clock. He added that over five dozen cops will be deployed around the largest Eid congregation in the city, the Charsadda Road Eidgah.

Moreover, 118 women police have been deployed in several markets across the city to maintain law and order.

Around 21 additional police vans have been tasked to patrol the city’s streets while seven deputy superintendents of police, 13 station house officers and 59 sub-inspectors have been deployed under the supervision of superintendents of police to maintain law and order.

CCPO Tahir Khan urged all officers to keep a close eye on the suspicious actives around them. A quick response force has also been made available to respond to emergencies.
