Damaging beauty standards

Moving away from such a trend would mean embracing one’s natural self in all its beauty

ISLAMABAD: The makeup industry has taken decades to create the myth of perfection and flawlessness embodied in one’s looks and skin. The notion of beauty being attached to physical appearances and perfection of looks combined with the obsession of fair skin is deeply ingrained in the minds of the majority. For men, it has become one of the most important if not the only criterion to choose a potential suitor. Simultaneously, women’s need to achieve beauty standards set by society is mostly channelled by their need to bag a nice suitor. Beauty-bound perceptions of perceived likeliness have easily blurred equally important personality traits.

Over the years, makeup industry giants have created the illusion of ‘beauty’ that girl after girl try to achieve to attain what they proclaim ‘satisfaction’. But in reality the only one truly satisfied are themselves by raking in huge profits for flawed flawlessness.

Moving away from such a trend would mean embracing one’s natural self in all its beauty. But ironically, that idea too is being sold by makeup giants through products which promise to ‘embrace your naturalness’. The much popular ‘no makeup trend’ which is only achieved after one wears layers of concealing products on their skin. As a result, if we take away makeup products from many women they are pushed into existential crisis. Makeup in the 21st century defines one’s existence and by extension the social acceptance they tend to find.
