ISLAMABAD: The twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad were jolted by a medium intensity earthquake which struck the region on Sunday evening. “The epicentre of the earthquake was 67 kilometres to the North of Mingora (Swat) with a magnitude of 5.0 and its depth was 17 kilometres,” a Pakistan Meteorological Departments’ National Seismic Monitoring Centre Islamabad official told The Express Tribune. He said although the earthquake lasted for only a few seconds, its intensity was felt in northern parts of the country particularly in Mansehra, Nathiagali, Islamabad and Rawalpindi. However, the United States Geological Survey put the earthquake to be just 6.3 kilometres west of Rawalpindi and a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter Scale and at a relatively shallow depth of 30.9 kilometres.
