Zamung Kor director resigns, alleges corruption

Board of directors chief refutes allegations, claims director was fired by board

PESHAWAR: A director at the Zamung Kor - a model home for street children in Peshawar – has resigned alleging corruption by senior officials of the social welfare organisation.

However, Imtiyaz Hussain Gillani, the chairman of the Zamung Kor’s Board of Directors, has dismissed the allegations against him, noting that instead of the official levelling the allegations had been fired by the board following recommendations from the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Planning and Development Department.



Zamung Kor Home Director Major (retired) Harris Khan Khattak on Wednesday said that he had resigned from his post.

“I raised my voice against the corruption of BoD chairman who buys a car worth Rs2 million and demands [money] for his home and other facilities,” he said while talking to The Express Tribune.

Khattak said that currently 150 children, including street children, orphans and out-of-school children were enrolled in Zamung Kor.

He added that all members on Zamung Kor’s board were working voluntarily while the K-P Child Protection Rules 2016 clearly state that a member of the board would not draw any benefits from the home funds.

Khattak claimed that chairman Gillani and some other board members were involved in corruption and that he could no longer tolerate someone using money, meant for orphan children, for their personal interests.

In this regard, he pointed out that the condition of the shelter was worsening day-by-day as the authorities continue to divert money for personal interests rather than dedicating it towards children.

However, when contacted, BoD Chairman Gillani dismissed all allegations levelled against him and said that last week a government monitoring team had visited the facility.



The former vice chancellor of the University of Engineering Technology (UET) Peshawar went on to say that after the monitoring team submitted its report to the K-P P&D department, the P&D department expressed some reservations.
