LAHORE: The illegal motorcycle parking outside Aiwan-e-Adl is not only affecting heavy traffic flow but it is also a security threat for lawyers and litigants who visit the area every day.

According to Lahore Bar Association (LBA), lawyers would not park their motorcycles if the government provided them with an alternative place. The parking issue between bar representatives and government officials had never been solved for the last several years despite negotiations at top level.

LBA Vice President Chaudhary Irfan Sadiq Tarar said that the bar had several meetings with the government officials but all in vain.

“Undoubtedly, the parking stand poses a threat,” he said, adding that the bar had suggested that the parking area be moved to the yard at the Post Master General’s Office nearby or in office of Evacuee Trust Property but nothing worked.

“There is a lot of space when courts are closed, but during working days it is even difficult for a pedestrian to walk,” Advocate Chaudhary Ghulam Mujtaba said. “It will not be difficult for a terrorist to carry out an attack here.”

Another advocate Shahid Mahmood said that nothing could be done about it as lawyers have nowhere to park. Muhammad Sohail, a car driver said that it was sad that an illegal parking area that took up a large position of road had been set up around the courthouse. “I always get stuck in traffic jams,” he said.

Traffic wardens deputed near Aiwan-i-Adl said that they worked really hard to maintain traffic flow on the road, but their efforts bore no fruit because the parking area created a bottleneck.
