Honour for the honourable

Letter August 20, 2017
For once, everyone agreed on Dr Pfau’s state funeral and no arguments or trash talk was hurled at anyone

KARACHI: On Aug 19th, almost 10 days after Dr Ruth Pfau passed away, her state funeral was held in Karachi. It is heartening to see that a woman, also the one belonging to a religious minority, has been honoured in such a manner. For once, everyone — from politicians to the establishment and society, in general — agreed on Dr Pfau’s state funeral and no arguments or trash talk was hurled at anyone. This is perhaps, the least we could offer to a woman, who selflessly devoted her life to combating leprosy in Pakistan. Her relentless efforts helped Pakistan gain the status of being one of the first countries in Asia to have controlled leprosy, as declared the World Health Organisation in 1996. Hopefully with her demise, the fight against leprosy and other diseases may not end and her devotion will inspire many to follow in her footsteps.
