ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has sought an ‘explanation’ from the PEMRA chief for allowing state-run television to broadcast ‘contemptuous’ speeches of the ‘disqualified PM’ Nawaz Sharif during his GT Road rally.

A letter sent by PTI MNA Murad Saeed to PEMRA chief Absar Alam stated that PTV aired all speeches of the former PM where he repeatedly criticised Supreme Court judges and the armed forces.

“Was not it your responsibility to take [adequate] steps to block the live coverage of [all such] hate speeches under [the] PEMRA laws and the National Action Plan?” Saeed wrote.

He said the ‘disqualified PM’ repeatedly maligned the judges, who heard the Panamagate case, and state institutions.

Saeed mentioned that being head of the media regulatory authority, Alam was duty-bound to take action against the state-run television for repeatedly airing such “contemptuous and anti-Pakistan content”.

The MNA wondered if Alam played the role of an ‘accomplice’ of the ousted PM, telling him to come up with a response within seven days otherwise the PTI reserved the right to move court against him.
