Kulsoom’s nomination for NA-120 challenged

Petitioner claims that name the party registered under the disqualified PM cannot be used in elections

LAHORE: The nomination papers of Kulsoom Nawaz, wife of deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif and a ruling party contestant for NA-120 seat, have been challenged on the grounds that a candidate cannot use the name of a disqualified person’s party in the election.

The National Assembly seat from Lahore fell vacant after Kulsoom’s husband Nawaz Sharif was disqualified as prime minister by the Supreme Court for not declaring assets in his nomination papers filed for the 2013 general election.

Kulsoom’s nomination papers were challenged in the Lahore office of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday by advocate Sarfraz.



The petitioner submitted that the country’s top court had disqualified Nawaz Sharif for not being Sadiq (truthful) and Ameen (honest).

He claimed that since the name of the party, registered in the name of the disqualified PM, could not be used in the election, the nomination papers of Kusloom Nawaz as a contestant of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) should be rejected.

According to the petitioner, the words “Nawaz Sharif” cannot be used in election after the Supreme Court’s verdict.

Besides Kulsoom Nawaz, notable among those in the run for NA-120 are Dr Yasmeen Rashid of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Hafiz Mian Zubair Kardar of the Pakistan Peoples Party and advocate Ishtiaq Chaudhary of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek. Former police constable Din Muhammad is also in the fray as an independent candidate.
