'Nuclear Weapons Treaty falls short of fulfilling essential conditions'

Pakistan reiterated on Monday its resolve for nuclear disarmament to promote peace, security, and stability at regional and global levels.

Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria in a statement said the country is committed to the goal of nukes-free world via a universal, non-discriminatory and comprehensive convention on nuclear weapons, according to Radio Pakistan.

He said the Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons did not fulfill the essential conditions, both in terms of process and substance.

The spokesperson noted that treaties that do not consider the interests of all stakeholders fail to achieve their objectives.

Pakistan, he added, like all the other nuclear armed with nuclear arsenal did not take part in its negotiations and cannot become a party to this treaty.

Zakaria said that the country underscores that the treaty in question neither forms a part of, nor contributes to the development of customary international law in any manner.

He reaffirmed Pakistan's belief in a cooperative and consensus-based process which will translate to equal and undiminished, if not enhanced security for all states to achieve the objective.

The spokesperson added that the Geneva-based conference on disarmament remains the most ideal forum to conclude such a convention.
