The only panacea to achieve peace between Pakistan and India is finding a solution to the Kashmir issue, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif said on Sunday.

“We know how to secure our borders, however, lasting peace can only be attained through solving the Kashmir issue,” he said while speaking to media in Sialkot, according to Express News.

The former defence minister said Pakistan’s options become limited if India is not willing to meet us halfway. “We want to dissipate tensions with India but they are not willing to do the same,” he added.

Pakistan, he added, wants friendly relations with Afghanistan as well but India must also play a part to make it a reality.

At last a foreign minister

“Pakistan has been fighting the war on terror for a long time now and the threat has decreased now owing to the great sacrifices made by the Pakistan Army,” he said.

Asif said peace between the two countries is intertwined with Kashmir dispute and in light of the UN agreement, the people of Kashmir want the right to vote for self determination.

“Our foreign policy will be in accordance with the wishes of the people, and in view of what is in the best interest of Pakistan,” he said. “Both countries want the continuity of the Indus Waters Treaty, however, any violation would worsen relations even further.”

He said Pakistan will help Kashmiris achieve their right to hold a referendum, which has also been recognised by the United Nations and the global community.

when something didn’t work for 70 years, what do we Pakistanis do? Try the same thing again! Wake up – India not interested in talking about Kashmir. Only interested in trying to brutally suppress the Kashmiris. Wake up, we can NEVER have anything positive from India. Even if somehow the whole world gangs up on India and forces it to give Kashmiris the right of self-determination in line with UN resolutions, the Indians will NEVER be Pakistan’s friends. The sooner Pakistan realizes the better. We have wasted enough time on Indians. Its not worth it. To help Kashmiris, we need to engage with the world community, not these Indians. They will not change. Do we want to waste 70 more years, taking one step forward, then 2 steps back? 70 more years of calling the High Commissioner of India and “protesting” unprovoked firing, shelling? are we that thick? UN resolution is a suggestion. Till now Pakistan has refused to abide by UN resolution and refused to vacate the Kashmir for plebiscite. People who were supposed to vote are also dead. Best solution is both countries go to ICJ and abide by the decision, whatever that maybe.Recommend

Well..the honorable minister..have a clarification..are you ok to hold referendum after as many kashmiri pundits are settled in the valley?..I mean the current population is brainwashed and don’t know the value of development and coexistence..I’m quite sure if at all Kashmir becomes free ,that would be the worst day in the history of kashmir..Leave your egos aside and imagine the benefits kashmiris would get if they leave terrorism and cooperate with India..I just wish I take my family there to kashmir in future for a tourist visit like they use to do in the 70s..Recommend
