QUETTA: Cost-cutting measures, including avoiding installing proper safety equipment, adopted by coalmine contractors result in deaths of countless miners, a top office-bearer of the National Labor Federation (NLF) said on Sunday.

Balochistan president of the federation Abdul Raheem Mirdadkhail was speaking at a memorial service held in memory of the 43 coalminers killed in the Sorrange coalmine collapse in March this year.

He said that miners lost their lives because there was no methan gas detector, alternative escape route or even a rescue plan.
