A problem which needs attention

Examinations are considered milestones in achieving admissions or jobs in higher educational institutions

ISLAMABAD: Last week, I was shocked when I found out the results of entrance tests. If we look at matric and intermediate results, students get high marks, but when they appear in entrance tests, they fail badly. The main reason behind this failure is cheating in exams.

Examinations are considered as significant milestones in achieving admissions or jobs in higher educational institutions. Thus, the achievement of high marks or grades is considered the main goal. Students are under tremendous stress from their parents and teachers to do well in examinations. Peer pressure is also felt for fear of being ridiculed in the case of low grades. Fear of failing and not being able to get admissions to colleges or universities looms over students at secondary and higher secondary levels. Even suicides have been reported in Pakistan due to this failure. These could be some of the reasons why many students resort to cheating to get through the examinations.

Due to cheating, the spirit of hardworking students is undermined and they feel discouraged. As a result of cheating, we are unable to produce intellectuals, scholars and good researchers. If we want our education to be effective, we should get rid of this problem. From the onset, our students fall prey to the misperception that we do not need to work hard for exams because they know that they can pass with a good score without any preparation or diligence. I hope that the education department will give proper attention to this evil. We cannot progress in the field of education until we get rid of this issue.
