As news of the ouster of the now former prime minister Nawaz Sharif made headlines across the world, British journalist, Jemima Goldsmith, the former wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan, also shared her response to the news on social media.

“Good riddance to the man who tried to get me jailed when I was pregnant with my 2nd child on trumped up (non bailable) charges of smuggling,” she tweeted.

Goldsmith was talking about the smuggling charges brought against her during Nawaz Sharif’s tenure as PM in 1999 when she was still married to Khan.

According to old news reports, Goldsmith was sending 397 tiles to her mother in London in December 1998 when the package was seized by the customs authorities in Pakistan.

Upon inspection the archaeological department declared that the tiles were “antiques”.  The export of antiques is illegal and a non-bailable offence in Pakistan and charges were brought against her in January 1999 wherein she faced a six-month jail sentence and Rs5,000 fine if found guilty.

Imran Khan accused the then government of trying to malign his wife in a fake case because he had been critical Nawaz Sharif’s government.

She returned to Pakistan in November 1999 to defend the charges after former president General Pervez Musharraf overthrew Sharif’s government.

On Friday, Sharif was ousted from the premiership for the third time, this time by the Supreme Court of Pakistan which disqualified the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz head for failing to declare one of his income sources when he ran for office in 2013.

Goldsmith celebrated the SC decision on Twitter and claimed that the next PM would be the first one in Pakistan's history to complete his term, implying that her ex-husband would win the 2018 elections.
