Hickerson lost his temper after learning that Dee Whigham, 25, was born a man.
According to the Mississippi’s Jacksonville Circuit Court, Ms Whigham was knifed multiple times and her throat was slashed before she was left for dead.
The two met on a dating site and had been chatting online for two months prior to the killing.

On July 23, 2017, they met for the first time when Ms Whigham was visiting the city of Biloxi, where Hickerson lived.
The court hearings stated that the hospital nurse picked him up from the Keesler Air Force Base gate and drove them to a nearby hotel.
CCTV footage obtained shows that the two walked into a room around 8:30pm and Hickerson left 23 minutes later with a shirt wrapped around his neck.
It was around 9:45pm when Ms Whigham’s body was found by her friends.
“An Air Force instructor later recognised Hickerson in a police appeal over the killing and reported him to detectives,” said WLOX news channel.

Once in custody, Hickerson informed the police that he and Ms Whigham had had sex at the hotel before he found out she was transgender.
The court jailed him for 40 years after he pleaded guilty to second degree murder. He will also be serving a 15 year sentence for robbing Ms Whigham’s mobile phone and purse.
"I think the plea is a slap in the face," she said. "He gets a chance to see his family and I don't have that chance with my child," said Ms Whigham’s mother.
