Encouraging our youth

Letter July 27, 2017
The encouragement of the government and our civil society will inspire many others

KARACHI: There is rarely good news that comes out of Pakistan or its people so when it does, we need to unite and acknowledge such efforts. This year the coveted Emmy awards have nominated two of Pakistan’s documentaries in five of its categories, giving the nation a good reason to rejoice, especially during the political turmoil we are faced with.

Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who already brought home the Academy Awards, has been nominated once again for A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness in three categories, which are Best Documentary, Outstanding Short Documentary and Outstanding Music and Sound. And the controversial Among The Believers, a documentary by Mohammad Ali Naqvi has bagged in two nominations in the categories of Outstanding Politics and Government Documentary.

As much as I hope that these filmmakers win the Emmys, I also hope that the government lauds their efforts. The encouragement of the government and our civil society will inspire many others and it is only through encouragement that we can build a confident and proficient youth.
