LAHORE: Tanker related maladies are on the rise. Sometimes it is the water tanker mafia threatening water supply in most of DHA, Clifton and other posh residential areas in Karachi. Of late petrol supply system stands threatened. Either there is an oil tanker that has an accident spilling oil, leading to fire with loss of life — or other road accidents. There is no effort to take measures to prevent the recurrence of such accidents.

Oil marketing used to have regional storage depots from where retail outlets were fed. It was a greater and stocked storage capacity system, fed by railway for supplies from Keamari. The condition of road tankers providing supplies within the region met safety requirements. The drivers were not unskilled. Oil tankers accidents were rare and unheard of. Today, there is complete disregard of all safety requirements. Tanker mafia has become powerful and there is a dire need to decentralise the system.
