Taking away our smiles

Letter July 26, 2017
It breaks my heart to know I will never be able to see him again

KARACHI: It is unfortunate that despite all the operations launched to counter militancy and extremism, Lahore bled on July 24th. In this chain of militants targeting law-enforcement agencies, a suicide bomber blew himself up in front of police constables, martyring nine of them and over 15 civilians. My heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones in the blast.

On the same day, a traffic warden in Karachi near a busy junction was gunned down by unknown assailants. And I knew him, a white haired chubby looking man. I didn’t know his name but we greeted each other every day when I passed him directing traffic at the signal. Often, I would say thank you for letting my car go and he would calmly put his hand on his chest to say welcome with a smile.

It breaks my heart to know I will never be able to see him again. May his soul rest in peace.
