Lawyer to argue on petition asking law enforcement agencies to curb crime

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) asked on Monday a lawyer to come prepared for arguments on his petition seeking direction for the provincial government and police authorities to curb increasing street crimes in the metropolis.

Heading a two-judge bench, SHC Chief Justice Ahmed Ali M Sheikh adjourned the hearing till a date to be later notified by the office.

Advocate Muzamil Mumtaz Meo had filed the petition against surge in street crime in Karachi and sought directions for the police and paramilitary force to curb the same. He had named the provincial chief secretary, home secretary, inspector-general of police and others as respondents.

He told the judges that the graph of street crime in the city had jumped to an alarming height and criminals were depriving citizens of their valuables. Many people have lost their lives and others have been injured during street crimes, he claimed.



The petitioner pointed out that most of such crimes were being committed in the Landhi and Korangi neighbourhoods.

He alleged that the police had failed to control increasing street crime in the city and to provide protection to the citizens.

In the plea, he requested to the court to direct the police and other law enforcement agencies to take action against the criminals and provide protection to the citizens, which was their duty under the law.

Taking up the matter, the judges asked the petitioner to come prepared on the next date to argue on the matter.
